Your Resume is a great tool for you to win an interview. Every resume should be one of a kind. Your resume must be appropriate to the position that you are applying for. 

Consider your resume as your own advertisement. Resume is your reflection.

It aims to attract attention of your employer. Your main goal is to get the employers' attention and inspire an interest to meet you in person. Once you get their attention, their next step is to pick up the phone and invite you for an interview.

Here are some tips on how to write your resume.

First list down  your preferred positions and if you can search the companies that are in need of the position that you are looking for it will be better since you will land on a job that fits your desire.

Why do you need to have a resume?

  • To provide an Updated  contact information, such as contact numbers (mobile and/or landline), home address and email address.
  • A form that entails ones experience, educational level, skills containing basic facts that can help the employer get a glimpse of who you are
  • To include details about your background information of what you did and what you can do for your new employer
  • To be placed in 201 files or employer's personnel files.
  • One should update his/her resume as soon as one has a new interesting facts or new achievements to add on his personal data.
  • Treat your resume as your biography. It should focus more on your achievements, whether it is your educational attainment, skills, projects, organization, jobs, etc.  This will play a big part and a key to fit the lock that you want to enter.

3 types of Resume format

1. Chronological Resume

                Chronological Resume is the most traditional among other format, it highlights employment history, dates , places and job titles, under must include your achievements  during the time of the employment. Using this type of format is effective to show that you want to work in the same type of industries. Your employment history must show your career growth and you must indicate on your job objective the new career path that you would like to take. Months or years of gap of being unemployed is not pleasant but inputting details on how you manage the period that you are jobless by being productive can divert the gap into a constructive period of your life.

      2. Functional Resume

                      Functional Resume is used when you want to change your career path. If you have years of unemployed gap this is the type of resume for you. For it highlights achievements and skills you've done throughout the years of being unemployed but make sure to put productive input and it should be towards the directive of the job you are aiming for.

      3. Combination Resume

      Combination Resume is the best among the other resume format. Using this highlights the work history and followed by your skills achieved during your employment history according to your employer and job title. This is being used when you want to have a career change or you want to move forward to the current industry that you are in right now.

      Employers Preference:

      Chronological Format is the top choice of most employers, but Combination format attract more attention if this is being used.

      Submitting a Functional format resume will place your form among the least priority. Employers tends to see that by using this it might mean that you might be hiding something from your past experiences or even your achievements might be phony. To eliminate this suspicions make sure that you should clearly identify when and where the achievement took place by mentioning a function, an organization, job, event or activity whether during your work or education history.

      Resume Heading

      Heading should be placed at the top of page one and should not be placed at the header part of the word document. Must contain a readable font Complete Name, Phone Number, Home Address  & Email Address.


      • Complete name - letters should be in bold and font must be a bit larger than the rest of the text.
      • Address- Your current address must be place, your place of residence during the time of your application. If you have other alternative residence you can also include that as part of your heading just in case you are planning to move soon. Your address determine the distance to your work.  Recruiters usually check the distance of your home to office, they need to consider your punctuality, make sure you are prepared to travel and wake up early in case the company that you are applying for is too far from your places.  
      • Phone Number - Always make sure that the phone number that you place should be active and always check for typo, this is the important details that you shouldn't miss otherwise your resume will be useless if your employer cannot get hold of you.
      • Email Address - Personal decent email address should be place. Make sure that email address is readable and free from typo, this is one way the recruiter can get hold of you especially when you are not answering your phone. If you are currently employed please make sure you do not use your corporate email address it’s not a good impression to your new employer.
      • Social networking profile - If your email is associated with your social networking account, like facebook, make sure that your employer will not find any info that can put your resume in bad shape, otherwise you are letting them see skeletons inside your closet. Checking your Social Networking profile entails your behavior, this is another way for the employers to get to really know you. If you include this please be prepared to accept the consequences, it can create and destroy your application. 

      Job Objective (with or without)

      Is your initial self advertisement. This portion must attract your reader in order for them to move on to the next details. Must consist of the position you desire, the responsibility that you are willing to take and this area should be short but striking.

      • Position as Personal Assistant / Office Manager
      • Administrative position using skills in desktop publishing

      • A position in Marketing & Product Management with a focus on Project Coordination and Team Leadership

                  If you earned a title, and it is related to your job objective you can use this on your application to highlight a statement.

                                  Work Experience should be types in the body of the resume. Depending on your experiences, you can go back up to 10 years, if more you can include it but be sure it is helpful in your current application, if not it's ok not to put it.

                                                   Your employer wants to see your contribution to the position you used to hold. Show your employer the output you produced during the period of your employment.

                                          Educational Background

                                          Employer will definitely have a quick glance to check your credentials. Educational Background is the key essential in most employers, showing your best credential is like presenting yourself with more favor. Although some company now a days do not require a degree there are still those who really prefer to have someone with at least finished a degree or vocational course.

                                          Major or minor achievements, trainings and seminars during your collegiate years is an advantage especially if it is related to the position that you are applying for. It will also show how active you are.

                                              Did you know that:

                                              Most of us shift courses in the middle of our college years, did you know that it is ok not to place the list of schools you attended to but only the institution that gave you your degree.

                                              Instead of putting the range of date, just indicate the year you graduated, in this regard you can get away knowing that you spent too much time on your college years.

                                              Certificates that you gathered during the course of your education should be placed under education

                                              Character References

                                              For the Character References others prefer to just write available upon request. Did you know that there are recruiters who thinks that you are playing hard to get or you might be hiding something, but for jobseekers point of view, this is another way for the employer to contact them.  MEI suggestion to include it right away.

                                              Another thing, most common mistakes of the individual is putting down references that doesn't really know them, or sometimes the jobseekers fail to inform the person he/she included on his/her resume. Remember that Character References must contain list of people that are above your level, this is to determine what kind of person you are.

                                              Sample if you are already employed, person you need to include are your previous superiors, person you worked for but not the same level or lower level than you, a client but make sure you have a good relationship with them otherwise you are just placing your application in a quicksand. If you are fresh graduate or undergrad with no experience at all, to include their professor, priest, head of an organization or barangay officials, or their superior of the company they serve during OJT.
